From the mouth of the Horse

US President Barack ObamaIt was enlightening to see Barack Obama, the US President, argue the case for Britain remaining a member of the European Union.

Many in the Out camp were unsurprisingly hostile to the President’s intervention, with Messrs Johnson and Farage attacking the US President for being “part-Kenyan” (which he isn’t) and therefore holding some sort of grudge because of colonialism.

Firstly, we committed atrocities in Kenya in the name of empire and if the President was Kenyan, and was alive during the time of empire, then he’s perfectly right to hold a grudge!

But he’s not Kenyan, never experienced colonial Kenya, and so his intervention has absolutely nothing at all to do with the President himself.

It is about America’s opinion.

As the only superpower in today’s geopolitical world, the USA has a certain sway on many nation’s economies – not least our own.

So it is only right that our biggest trading partner outside of the EU voices their opinion on the potential outcome of the referendum. Obama is correct, Britain will be at the back of the queue. We are a market of 70 million whereas the EU is a market of 500 million. We simply can’t compete with the EU when it comes to ensuring favourable trade deals with other nations. The USA does not want a trade deal with the U.K. without an unbalanced agreement as it simply wouldn’t be worth their while.

Perhaps Leave should start asking other nations what their plans are regarding a British withdrawal from the European Union before making assumptions based on their own wants.
